The report also shows one in every 538 U.S. households received a foreclosure filing during the month. “The March numbers show that overall foreclosure activity so far this year continues to run nearly 60 percent above the levels we saw last year,” said James J. Saccacio, chief executive officer of RealtyTrac.

Saccacio, chief executive officer of RealtyTrac. “However, the year-over-year increase of 60 percent this February was significantly higher than the 19 percent year-over-year increase in February 2007, indicating we have still not reached the peak of foreclosure activity in this cycle.”

Saccacio, chief executive officer of RealtyTrac. “However, the 8 percent monthly increase in January is not as precipitous as the 19 percent spike we saw in January of 2007, and several key states actually experienced decreasing foreclosure activity from the previous month.”

Saccacio, chief executive officer of RealtyTrac. “Most of the metro areas with the highest foreclosure rates were either cities like Stockton, with recent meteoric growth and unsustainable home price appreciation, or cities like Detroit, undergoing a more widespread economic downturn.”

A total of 215,749 foreclosure filings were reported in December, up 97 percent from December 2006 and bringing the fourth-quarter total to 642,150 filings on 527,740 properties — up 1 percent from the previous quarter and up 86 percent from the fourth quarter of 2006.
